The sprinklers are placed above the area which is to be protected from fire under the ceilings. Since the water is always present in the pipes, the sprinklers are always in a ready to use state. Whenever there is a fire, the sprinklers would activate once the temperature rises high enough, and the water from it would be sprayed over the fire with force which would completely extinguish it or at least control it till the fire department people arrives. The system won't activate with smoke and only sprinklers near the fire would start spraying water. And this system is completely automatic without the intervention of any human being. So this system would work even when no body is there in home or office.
