Different types of fire extinguishers may be required to contain different classes of fire. While ABC fire extinguishers can be used for all 3 classes of fire namely A, B and C. However, when it is used on electronic and electrical equipments, it may damage them and lead to losses as ABC type leaves residue post fire. When such costly electrical items and other devices are involved in a fire, Co2 fire extinguisher is preferable as it leaves no residue after fire and hence no damage to equipment. It releases Co2 gas under pressure and replaces oxygen with inert Co2 and is anti - combustion. Care should be taken while using co2 type extinguisher, particularly in a confined space, as it quickly replaces oxygen with Co2 and may asphyxiate if inhaled. This extinguisher does not contain fire by cooling the fire and therefore it is not suggested for containing Class A type fire involving solid.
